Sun 24-May-09 (departing Israel)

I have prepared this entry in advance, so it should post around 6pm local time on Sunday while we are enroute to the airport. It's currently just after midnight here.

Just before 10pm local time we will be departing the land of milk and honey. We will have a two-night stopover before flying into Sydney and quickly connecting to Canberra. We will have wheelchair support at each airport to minimise Maria's need to walk long distances.

We have decided to withhold specific information on our flights as we do not wish to have anyone greet us at either Sydney or Canberra airports. We know some of you reading this and living in either city may find this difficult, but I know you will understand. It is going to be an exhausting trip, especially for Maria who will need to take additional steroids prior to ascent and descent on all flights because brain edema (swelling) seen in her recent CT scan. However, the doctors still cleared us to depart.

We will have little rest as the day after we hit Australian soil, Ben and Gabi will already visit school for a time to meet their new teachers and classmates/ Maria and I will be pretty much straight into specialists appointments and scans with the aim of Maria commencing her six month stint of chemotherapy on 5 June, four weeks from end of concomitant treatment as per international protocol.

We will need privacy and space while acclimatising to a new routine. I will keep the blog active (as soon as we get internet connected at home) to keep y'all posted on how we are progressing, when we feel we will be in a position to start seeing people, and how that will be coordinated. Consider me the family bouncer/doorman with much experience gained from nearly two years of living in Israel and being immersed in our current situation over the past three months.

We thank you in advance for respecting our privacy.
